Types of Garment Trims Used in Apparel Manufacturing

"Trims" is the general term for the smaller components added to a garment beyond the main fabric — the parts that hold it together, finish it, or make it fit. Elastic, buttons, fusing, labels, zippers and drawcords all fall under this umbrella. Most apparel products use several trim types at once.

Common types of garment trims

  • Elastic tapes — woven, knitted or braided elastic used for waistbands, cuffs and elasticated seams, wherever a garment needs to stretch and return to shape.
  • Buttons — plastic, metal, wood or shell fastenings, sized and specified by hole count, shank type and diameter (commonly measured in "ligne").
  • Interlining / fusing — a woven or non-woven material fused to the inside of collars, cuffs and plackets to add structure and crispness without changing the outer fabric.
  • Labels and tags — woven or printed labels for brand, size and care information.
  • Zippers — metal or plastic-tooth closures for openings that need to be repeatedly opened and closed.
  • Drawcords and tapes — cords and flat tapes used at waistbands and hoods.
  • Hooks and fasteners — hook-and-eye, snap and other closures used where buttons or zippers aren't suitable.

Goyal Lining's own catalogue covers three of these — elastic, buttons and fusing (interlining) — rather than the full list above.

Why trims matter in garment construction

A garment's fabric gets most of the attention, but trims determine a lot of the finished product's feel and durability — how a waistband holds up over repeated wear, whether a button matches the garment's weight and use, or whether interlining keeps a collar crisp through washing. Getting the trim spec wrong is a common cause of rework late in production.

Choosing the right trim for your product

The right choice depends on the garment type, the finish you're going for, and how the product will be used and cared for. A few starting questions: What's the garment category (formalwear, innerwear, sportswear)? What's the expected wash/wear cycle? Is a specific look (matte, glossy, natural) required? Answering these narrows down material, construction and finish before you request samples or a quote.
